Giant Redwood - February 2015

Giant Redwood - February 2015
Thanks to John for writing to say, "This one is growing 'wild' in part of what is known as Raith Estate in Kirkcaldy, Fife. It looks about 35 to 40m high (definitely more than 30m). There's also some other very interesting non-native trees in the same patch so I'm guessing that sometime near the end of the 19th Century, the Laird of the estate or someone from his family had a little experimental patch in the plantation."

Thanks for the information and photographs of this Giant Redwood, the dogs are a great addition! It sounds like a good collection of trees on the estate and you are very likely correct about the planting of them by the owners of the estate, it was the thing to do in the Victorian era when the plant hunters brought them back from overseas in the 1850s.

Chris wrote to say, "I thought you would be interested to know that they are in fact at least 20 redwoods in the estate woods there are also some on the estate grounds which the public can't access, a massive redwood in the grounds of Datie Mill House that can be seen from Google maps street view, and at least two at the grave/tomb site of Robert Munro Ferguson."

Thank you for letting me know about the additional Redwoods on the Raith Estate. I spy another dog in this picture but one that apparently isn't so keen on sitting still to have its photograph taken with the Redwoods.
