Giant Redwood - April 2014
Thanks to Chris for sending the above photograph of an avenue of Giant Redwood on the former Dunmore Estate near Airth, Stirlingshire. He wrote, "The avenue is located 1 mile west of Airth and 7 miles east of Stirling off the A905 / B9124 next to the Dunmore Pineapple - a National Trust Scotland site. Grid Ref NS889884

There is an avenue of about 35 to 40 Sequoias, possibly more, of considerable size and age. I believe the estate was re-planned in the 1840s by the Earl of Dunmore and the avenue was presumably panted then. Dunmore House no longer exists but the avenue of trees and the Pineapple remain.

Giant Redwood - June 2016

Giant Redwood - June 2016
Thanks to Scott for the above photographs of this avenue taken in June 2016. He says, "I recently found around 30-35 Giant Sequoia at a place called the Dunmore Pineapple near Stirling. The old Dunmore House is now a derelict but it had a walled garden with a building for growing pineapples, with a giant sandstone pineapple on its roof. The garden and grounds are open for access to the public although the main house is fenced off as it is in such a bad condition. Leading away from the walled garden is an avenue of about 30 Giant Sequoia with some not looking too healthy and 1 that looks pretty much dead or close to it. But there are a few much younger ones that have obviously grown naturally. There are a few more erratics scattered around the grounds of the Dunmore Estate.

You can see them clearly from the village of Dunmore on the A905 and there is a path from the village to the trees, but there is a car park next to the walled garden as well. If you approach from the South and go to the car park at the walled garden you wouldn't even see them or know they are there.
"

* * * Update March 2017 * * *
Thanks to Peggy who mentioned that the first Giant Redwood seeds were not sent to Scotland until 1853, so it would have been a decade or so later when the trees were planted. Peggy will also be on the look out for another Giant Redwood here because she "recently came across a photo of a very large specimen at the big house itself."
